Devised by the well-to-do sportsmen of the 19th and 20th centuries as an alternative to the cumbersome wardrobes worn for early recreational pursuits of the era, the Polo Shirt, as it came be called, offered users the first series of garment innovations dedicated solely to sports related activities. Short sleeve length and softer jersey knits of pique cotton delivered enhanced comfort while the refinement of its signature classic collar adhered to norms of dress required of the gentlemen of the day.
